THE MLSE TEAM UP CHALLENGE RETURNS FOR 2015 AT DOWNSVIEW PARK
November 2014

The MLSE Team Up Challenge presented by Ford and the MLSE Foundation is back for a third year with representatives from the Toronto Maple Leafs, Toronto Raptors, Toronto FC and Toronto Marlies joining amateur athletes on their respective teams. Scheduled for Sunday, June 14, 2015, the day-long event will once again see teams compete in basketball, ball hockey and soccer to raise funds to support Camp Trillium. With help from the MLSE Foundation, Camp Trillium will give kids living with cancer and their families the opportunity to dream big through sports and recreational programming.

As Toronto prepares to welcome the world for the Pan Am and Parapan American Games in 2015, MLSE has chosen to relocate the Team Up Challenge to Downsview Park this year. Downsview Park incorporates sport, recreation, culture and leisure by offering a diverse range of public activities and programs. Downsview Park offers the benefit of an improved basketball facility and the indoor and outdoor fields provide greater flexibility during inclement weather.

“We’re excited to bring the tournament back for a third summer and change the lives of kids living with cancer through our partnership with Camp Trillium,” said Mike Bartlett, Executive Director of the MLSE Foundation. “Changing the venue of the event gives us the opportunity to host our participants in yet another amazing Toronto venue, which includes both Downsview Park and the HoopDome. These fantastic facilities will allow us to deliver a truly professional sporting experience.”

Each of the participating teams will be paired with a Camp Trillium family who will serve as their honorary coaches to motivate them throughout their fundraising efforts. With a minimum fundraising goal of $5,000, every team will have the opportunity to send at least one family from the Greater Toronto Area to camp.

Each year across Ontario nearly 400 parents will learn that their children have cancer. Only one place offers recreational experiences to kids living with cancer, their siblings and parents, so all together they can heal and have fun. Camp Trillium provides more than 50 urban recreational programs and two summer camps for children living with cancer and their families. Earlier this season, the Maple Leafs celebrated Hockey Fights Cancer Awareness Night where the MLSE Foundation surprised Camp Trillium with a cheque for $350,000 from funds raised during the 2014 MLSE Team Up Challenge.
“For two years Team Up Challenge participants and Camp Trillium families have worked together to raise funds and awareness for childhood cancer. Their commitment to the Challenge has sent over 700 children living with cancer in Toronto and the GTA to Camp Trillium. The commitment of the over 80 teams ensures that if even for a weekend or a week children can escape the hospital environment and be kids,” said Marci Shea Perry, Executive Director of Camp Trillium. “Every child should have the opportunity to be themselves and at Camp Trillium they are. The MLSE Team Up Challenge ensures that every child living with cancer can go to camp.”
In addition to providing competitors with the chance to excel in three sports, the Challenge will feature a day of live music, celebrity appearances and interactive activities. Top fundraising teams will also have the opportunity to draft a celebrity coach to their roster. MLSE Foundation
The MLSE Foundation believes all kids should have access to sport and the opportunity to develop lasting dreams on the playing field. With the support of all four MLSE teams – the Toronto Maple Leafs, Toronto Raptors, Toronto FC and the Toronto Marlies – the Foundation funds the refurbishment of local athletic facilities and programs that support kids through sport and recreation. Since launching in December 2009, the MLSE Foundation has invested more than $15 million into our community. For more information visit mlseteamupfoundation.org or follow @MLSEFoundation.
