Toronto Maple Leafs Host Hockey Fights Cancer
October 26th, 2013 was a special day for many at the Air Canada Centre (ACC). It was a Toronto Maple Leafs game day, and as always there was an exhilarating blue and white spirit amongst the people of Toronto. However this particular Saturday was different from most. This day, the Toronto Maple Leafs and the MLSE Team Up Challenge hosted Camp Trillium Awareness Night for Hockey Fights Cancer.

The Hockey Fights Cancer initiative is an NHL wide program that raises money and awareness for hockey's most important fight, cancer. As Camp Trillium offers year-round recreational experiences to bring children with cancer and their families together, the Toronto Maple Leafs decided to take this night to shed light on Camp Trillium's incredible efforts, along with raising funds to support their programs.

For a handful of Camp Trillium families, the day began at 10:30am as the campers sat in the lower bowl of the ACC to watch the Toronto Maple Leafs' morning skate. On top of that, 5 year old camper Jason made his Leafs TV debut appearance as he joined Toronto Maple Leafs host Brooke Pashley and MLSE Foundation Executive Director Michael Bartlett live on set for an exclusive interview.

The fun didn't stop there as the Camp Trillium families spent their afternoons checking out the legendary Hockey Hall of Fame, before returning for the evening's events. Joining the families at the ACC was their 2013 MLSE Team Up Challenge partner Captains who watched the Leafs from the neighboring suite. At the game, 50/50 tickets and mystery pucks were being sold, with all proceeds going towards Camp Trillium. Even the Lady Leafs, the wives and girlfriends of the Toronto Maple Leafs, got involved as they interacted with fans and sold 50/50 tickets and autographed mystery pucks. Their gracious efforts exemplified the Hockey Fights Cancer mandate and the fans responded with incredible enthusiasm.

Now, this Hockey Night in Canada concluded with the Toronto Maple Leafs winning the fight against the Pittsburgh Penguins, with a final score of 4-1. But the most important winners of the night were our friends from Camp Trillium. From the community suite donated by Toronto Maple Leafs forward, David Clarkson, these campers cheered long and hard for Blue and White. Their smiles and enthusiasm couldn’t even keep the Toronto Maple Leafs forward away, as 20 minutes after the game had ended, Clarkson made a visit to these captivating young fans. Clarkson made sure to say hello to each camper, sending them home with an autographed personalized t-shirt, plenty of photos, and everlasting memories.
